How do you explain homosexuality in wild animals. The topic has come up in conversation, one commenting that 10% of animals in the wild are known to be homosexual.


Thank you for your question. We appreciate the fact that you think of us when looking to defend against the lies of the world, the flesh and the Devil. The statistic you are referring to, e.g. approximately 10% of animals exhibit homosexual behavior, is often thrown about by those who desire to support homosexuality as an acceptable alternative lifestyle or more recently, as a civil right.

The fact that bizarre behavior, e.g. used in the sense that it does not propagate the species and if it were to be the rule rather than the exception would most certainly have the most dire consequences for the species exhibiting the behavior, can be observed in nature does not in any way validate the behavior. Male lions will often kill and eat their own young. Does that qualify as evidence that infanticide is good or natural? Of course not.

Remember also that sexual behavior is part of the Creators plan for His creation, e.g. to be fruitful and multiply. It is not only extremely pleasurable and therefore can become an addiction leading to serious dysfunction, the drive to procreate among the animal kingdom is strongly instinctual. I don’t want to be vulgar about this but who has not had an overly amorous canine attempt to procreate with his or her leg? I had a dog named Yogi Bear who seemed to be in love with a certain special pillow on our couch. So, what is this evidence of?

As people who have been born of God’s Holy Spirit, we should be able to speak the truth in love to others. We live in a fallen world. Men and women are fatally flawed, born afflicted with sin natures that require divine intervention in order to be healed and made whole. We do not look to nature for our guidance and we should never fail to point out to others that sin, homosexual or heterosexual in nature, separates us from God and leaves us in bondage, sinners in need of the Savior. At the same time, God has good news for the fatally flawed. His Son, the Messiah, died for our sins according to the prophecies of the Old Testament and was raised from the dead for our justification, according to those same prophecies. He is an equal opportunity Savior and offers forgiveness and new life to all sincerely come to Him by grace through faith.
